Diana, Princess of Wales, and why she can't Rest in Peace

March 6th 2008 03:04
The death of Diana, Princess of Wales, just won’t go away and this week we were ‘treated’ to the story of the so-called ‘love of her life’, heart surgeon, Hasnat Khan, who claims that he would have struggled to cope with the limelight that stuck to the Princess like an annoying rash.

I was never a huge fan of Princess Diana’s when she was alive. I thought she manipulated the media, played the victim to perfection and for someone eager to stay out of the media spotlight she certainly made some bizarre lifestyle choices.

Of course her passing was tragic in the way that anyone’s is when they leave behind a family at such a young age, perhaps even more so because of her tireless charity work.

However, the outpouring that followed her death was disproportionate to the person she was. She didn’t cure cancer, she didn’t dedicate her entire life to the well being of others (she actually drew comparisons with Mother Theresa, don’t forget), and she simply wasn’t as saintly as some of her outspoken supporters would have you believe. To be fair, no human being could be.

That said, the grief on display during the days, weeks and months after her tragic accident is nothing compared to the media circus since then. Diana has been dead for nearly eleven years but barely a week goes by without another related story grabbing the headlines.

Enough already.

I understand there’s yet another inquest into her death going on at the moment, but what I don’t understand is how the same stories and accounts of her death that we’ve heard a thousand times can still be making the news. I’m thoroughly bored with the whole thing.

There was no conspiracy, there was no plot by the Royal Family or their sympathisers, and whilst there may have been contributing human factors that led to the crash in Paris, it was simply an accident. Road traffic accidents happen every single day all over the world; they are not uncommon. Yet we don’t feel the need to investigate and pour over every single one of them, do we? Why should this be any different?

Obviously not every death involves such publicity seeking cretins as Paul Burrell (Diana’s ex-butler) and Mohammed Al Fayed (Dodi Fayed’s father), which is the real reason this story just won’t go away. Mohammed Al Fayed lost a son. We shouldn’t play down the sense of loss he must feel, but he appears to be seeking definitive answers that just aren’t there.

Paul Burrell, on the other hand, must surely go down as one of the most despicable men of all time. This media whore puts himself about the press like a seasoned movie star and isn’t happy unless somebody… anybody… is talking about him. It’s one thing to get on with the rest of your life as best you can, but it’s quite another to actively profit from the death of another human being.

Irregardless of the outcome of the inquiry or who we all eventually blame, Burrell is the real villain in this saga and I, for one, would love to see him pale into complete insignificance. Unfortunately, as long as we’re still talking about Diana’s death we should still expect Burrell to be doing the rounds, getting his dirty little hands greased more and more.

Well, this is just the prove to say that. "Fairy tale doesn't necessary means happly ever after."

Diana is such a lovely lady. it is a such a great pitty that her life ended up been trashed this way.

one problem...the driver's blood showed a huge amount of carbon monoxide, so much he should not have been able to stand. (so it must not have been his blood sample, but that of a suicide)

and no, it could not have come from the car air bag gas, as recently claimed, the company that makes them said it was not possible for this to be the cause....makes one wonder....but then again, there are lots of people who believe Oswald was responsible for JFK's death.

you know, it is often the unexpressed anger and feeling of impotence that people feel, when they know the government is lying, that leads to public outcry...just a thought.

The sensationalist option is always an attractive one, of course, but when you delve deep enough there are always going to be questions left unanswered. No RTA has ever been scrutinised the way this one has.

The fact remains that in the vast majority of cases, the simplest explanation tends to be the correct one and the simplest explanation here is that it was an accident. There were contributing factors, yes, but it was just an accident.

That said, I imagine we'll never be 100% sure of what happened that night.
