New Years Eve 2006, Sydney
December 5th 2006 11:21
New Year's Eve is always a special time, full of champagne, resolutions that no one keeps, and of course, fireworks. Second only to Rio de Janiero, Sydney's fireworks display is always something of a spectacular. Of course, the Harbour Bridge is always the centrepiece of the night, in the past boasting the likes of a pulsing heart (above), the Eternity sign, and the ever-present waterfall of fireworks.
In light of 2007 marking the 75th anniversary of the Harbour Bridge, NYE 2006 is proving to be one of the most ambitious displays to date. Organisers for the event are planning three separate light effects for the Bridge - the question mark, the coathanger, and the diamond. These effects will be pulled off with no less than one thousand shimmering lights over a forty-five hundred square metre area of the bridge.
This year's NYE event is based around a theme entitled "Diamond Night in Emerald City," borrowing heavily from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Each of the effects have their own meaning within the theme - the question mark resembles the idea of Wizard himself asking people who they really are. The coathanger is a reference to the Bridge itself, as "coathanger" is the nickname for it in Australian history. The final effect of the night, the diamond, will be the focal point of the night, representing a fantastic night in Sydney, the Emerald City.
Accompanying the bridge effects is the biggest fireworks display so far. Organisers have confirmed the use of 11,000 shells and 10,000 shooting comets to make up roughly 100,000 pyrotechnics effects. Last year's event was, for the first time, choreographed to music, and this year will be even moresos. Music has been suggested to cover a wide range of genres and time periods, from Foo Fighters to Prokofiev, and well-known movie themes the likes of The Wizard of Oz, The Chronicles of Narnia and Superman Returns.
Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore has said she expects up to a million people to see the event from the harbour itself, though in the past harbour-goers have been in excess of 1.2 million, so it would be no surprise if the numbers were exceeded.

I've never actually been to the harbour to see it live, but we'll see what this year brings.
